Place Setting at Pegasus Plaza

Completed while at buildingcommunityWORK

The Place Setting installation was a collaboration with local artist collective Sunset Art Studios and took place at Pegasus Plaza, a small park in downtown Dallas. Originally intended to begin in March of 2020, the project brought together local artists, designers, nonprofits, and residents to investigate, celebrate, and ruminate on the past, present, and future of public space downtown. With Pegasus Plaza as the setting, we designed a temporary installation made from off-the-shelf fencing components to serve as the backdrop for three months of programming where we learned about the history of downtown’s public spaces, shared information about current projects and efforts to improve public space, and together imagined an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for Dallas’ public spaces.

Following the de-installation, the pavilion will be broken up into smaller spaces and given to schools as part of a community garden program.  Programming includes two artist storytelling sessions with Sunset Art Studio, collaboration with the Dallas Public Library, bike repair classes, urban farming workshops, and more. The name of the project, “Place Setting”, refers to the aesthetic and utilitarian arrangement of tools and accessories that facilitate the shared experience of celebrating together, as well as the “setting” - place and time, or backdrop - in which stories - in this case the stories of a Dallas public common - take place.
